Start with the conversations, not the channels
A well-designed server gives every important conversation a clear home without making new members scan a wall of empty channels. Before you create anything, list the jobs your server has to do:
- Arrive and orient: where a new member lands, reads the rules and picks what they care about.
- Talk: the everyday chat, plus one or two topics that would drown the main channel.
- Get help: a place to ask questions, and a private route for reports.
- Run the server: a private area where staff talk and keep a record of moderation.
Each job becomes a category, and each category starts with the fewest channels that do the job. You can always add a channel when a conversation keeps getting lost.
Plan categories, channels and roles
Most good layouts share the same shape: a start-here category with read-only welcome, rules and announcement channels; a community category for chat; voice channels; a help area; and a private staff category at the bottom.
Plan roles at the same time. Put staff roles above the member roles they manage, keep a role per job rather than per person, and add opt-in ping roles so members choose which announcements reach them. Reserve Administrator for as few people as possible. The Discord roles and permissions setup guide covers the hierarchy and channel overrides in detail.
Skip the blank page if you like: Guardy Bot has five free Discord server templates that build this shape for you, on a new or an existing server, after you review every change.
Or start from a Guardy Bot template
Guardy Bot has five built-in templates, one per kind of community. Open Server planner in the dashboard, choose the community closest to yours, and answer a few questions, such as server size or whether you want a ticket desk. Guardy Bot then lists every channel, role, permission and setting it would add. You can use a template on an empty or an existing server, and it uses no AI credits.
| Guardy Bot template | Starting point | Up to |
|---|---|---|
| ⛏️ Minecraft | A Java or Bedrock server: join guide, builds and hall of fame, ranks, tickets for help and appeals. | 20 channels, 11 roles |
| 🎮 Gaming community | Looking for a group, clips and highlights, squad voice channels, events and support tickets. | 19 channels, 12 roles |
| 🎥 Streamer and creator | Live alerts, schedule, clips and fan art, highlights, and a small mod team. | 17 channels, 9 roles |
| 🍕 Friends | A few chat channels, voice for hanging out and gaming, and spam protection. | 7 channels, 2 roles |
| 🧰 Product and support | Changelog and status, a help forum, bug reports, feature requests and a ticket desk. | 16 channels, 6 roles |
This is the Gaming community template as Guardy Bot builds it with its default answers. Channel names use the emoji-and-dot style, such as 📢・announcements.

A layout is only the foundation. Each Guardy Bot template also switches on the features that run the server, already pointed at the channels it creates:
- AutoMod: the recommended protections against scam links, spam, mass mentions and invite links.
- Moderation log: every ban, kick, timeout and warning in a private staff channel.
- Welcome: a greeting in the welcome channel with a short guide to the server.
- Pick your roles: a button menu for platforms, editions and pings.
- Tickets: a ticket panel for help, reports and appeals, where the template has a support channel.
- Rules: starter rules posted in the rules channel, which you can edit any time.
Levels with rank roles, and a highlights or hall-of-fame channel, are part of the Minecraft, Gaming and Creator templates; you can switch them off in the questions. If no template fits, the AI Discord server builder drafts channels, roles and settings from a plain description, and Ask Guardy does the same in a chat. Neither changes anything until you approve.
Five channel and role layouts to copy by hand
These are practical examples you can adapt without Guardy Bot. They differ from Guardy Bot’s five templates and are not one-click discord.new links. Start with the smallest layout that meets your needs.
Community server
Use this for a public interest group, product community, membership group, or local organization. Keep #welcome, #rules and #announcements readable by everyone but writable only by the team, and put topic roles in #choose-roles so members control which conversations and notifications they receive.

Gaming server
Use this when people organize matches, form squads, and talk between sessions. Use roles to help members find relevant squads, not to create a decorative hierarchy, and keep player reports private.

Customer support server
Use this for a product, service, open-source project, or paid community where requests need ownership and a record. Do not ask members to post account, billing, or security details in a public help channel: route sensitive requests into private tickets.

Creator server
Use this for a streamer, podcaster, artist, newsletter, or other audience-led community. Separate official updates from general chat so members can follow the creator without accepting every conversation, and give collaborators only the permissions they need. Polls and giveaways fit well in a creator community.

Study group server
Use this for a class, certification cohort, reading group, or peer-learning community. Keep resource channels curated and send active discussion to a question channel or threads. If competition would distract from learning, leave leveling off.

Permission checklist before you invite members
Discord permissions combine server roles, category settings, and channel overrides. That flexibility is useful, but an accidental override can expose a staff channel or stop a bot from doing its job.
- Give
@everyoneonly the baseline access a new member needs. - Put staff roles above the member roles they must manage.
- Reserve the Administrator permission for the smallest possible group. Discord says it bypasses channel restrictions.
- Set access at category level where possible and keep child channels synced.
- Make staff, ticket, and incident categories private by default, then grant access to named roles.
- Check the bot role sits above roles it must assign or moderate, without granting unrelated permissions.
- Test as a new member, established member, moderator, and support agent before opening the server.
Already running a server? A Discord server audit with Guardy Bot’s Check my server flags the most common slips on this list, such as @everyone posting in #rules or seeing a staff channel. For the hierarchy, channel overrides, native Onboarding choices, and safe automation behind that checklist, use the Discord roles and permissions setup guide.
Turn your layout into a native Discord template
Discord’s native Server Templates copy categories, channels, roles and permissions into a new server. They do not merge into a server you already run, and they do not update automatically.
Build and test the server first. Then, on Discord desktop or in the browser, open Server Settings → Server Templates, name the template, add a clear description, and generate the link. Preview that link with a test account before sharing it. When the source server changes, return to the same screen and sync the template.
A native template carries the layout, not the workflows. Welcome automation, role menus, moderation rules and cases, private tickets, leveling and server logs come from a bot such as Guardy Bot. Start with the modules your team can operate confidently, then add more when the need is real.
